Mophead Hydrangea blooms on old stalks. Flowers have been formed late in Fall. Pruning in Spring can only be removing last year’s dead blooms. Otherwise, there will be less blooms since they will be cut off. For the branches that I decide to keep, I am only cutting above a set of strong buds. Fist set preferred but second set if the first set is weak. I am not looking to reduce the size of this one. It is the smaller of the two in the back yard. In fact, I want to see how big it will get. This was purchased some years ago. I no longer have the variety nor do I know the maximum size.
As always, I removed two older branches with plenty of branching and/or too low. This keep the plant in a young state and more productive.
