If you’re struggling to get DJ bookings, do what I did—start your own event. In this part of the course, I’ll show you how I did just that with my brand Mi Casa Es Tu Casa.

HOW I STARTED
I began DJing in 1988 on vinyl and held a residency at a local bar for over 3 years. I played in nearly every bar and club in town, which helped me get noticed. I even got local press coverage when I started producing music. I formed a DJ duo called SlavzIIhouse, and we began promoting our own nights, bringing in friends to DJ. We hosted parties in venues like Pacha London and Es Paradis Ibiza, had a residency in Madrid, and even played in Miami during the Winter Music Conference.

Years later, when I moved to a new area, I had to start over—nobody knew me. So I launched Mi Casa Es Tu Casa. Was it stressful? Yes. Time-consuming? Absolutely. But was it worth it? 100%.

You book yourself. This gets you back into the scene and builds a local audience.
Create your perfect night. Play the music you love to the crowd you want.
Build your reputation. Promoting shows earns you more respect in the industry.
Network and grow. Book DJs you admire, build connections, and learn.

Big-name DJs often start this way. Owning a successful event gives you more control and opportunity.

5 THINGS TO FOCUS ON:
1. Choose a name.
Write down loads of ideas, then narrow them down. Check that your top picks aren’t taken—search Google, Instagram, Facebook, and domain availability. Ask your audience for feedback—it gets them invested early on.

Once you’ve got a name, design a logo using the same steps.

2. Find the right venue.
Think about your vibe. If you’re going for a disco or house classics crowd, choose a stylish venue with cocktails and an older, well-dressed clientele. If it’s underground house or techno, go for moody and minimal. Start small. I chose a 180-capacity bar—better to have a packed small venue than a half-empty large one.

3. Prepare everything in advance.
Plan your DJ setup—what gear do you need? I used the Pioneer XDJ-RX, partly because I knew Brandon Block (my first guest DJ) had the same at home. Get branding made: a booth banner, T-shirts for DJs and bar staff, etc.

Decide on your ticketing—free entry, or charge a small fee? I pre-arranged a flat fee to pay myself and my guest DJs while making a small profit. This kept costs predictable and helped me avoid losing money.

Start simple and think of it like a business. You might not make much on your first few parties, but you’ll build momentum and a loyal following.

4. Promote your event.
Use Canva to design artwork in the right sizes for each social platform. Build a simple website or landing page and create a sociatap link hub. Print posters for your venue. Contact the local newspaper for coverage. Invite influencers—offer them a drink in exchange for a post. Book DJ friends who will help promote the event too.

Create a Facebook event and a free RSVP form via Wix Events or a similar tool—this helps build an email list of attendees, so you can market future parties and merch.

Use platforms like teemill.com to sell merch with zero upfront costs—they print and ship as orders come in.

5. On the day of the event:
Stay calm—you’ve done the work, now enjoy it. Don’t get drunk. This is your brand, your business. Celebrate after.

If people arrive late, don’t stress—it takes time to build a crowd. Focus on giving the best possible night to whoever shows up. Collect as much content as you can—photos, videos, testimonials. Ask guests on video what they thought of the party. Use these for your socials and promo.

Always look to improve—better sound, lighting, visuals, and bigger guest DJs. Make each party better than the last. Keep your standards high, and the sky’s the limit.
