Rich is Right! Below I explain how Rich has already helped me to not only grow as a DJ, but also grow my mobile DJ business!
I am so excited to bring you this interview series with elite world DJ, Rich Medina! I’ve already learned a ton from our hour long interview. Instead of launching one video of the entire hour, I am bringing you a series of video clips. This is video four in the series. In this short video, the man with the hat explains how – you can’t wear both hats!
One of my questions to Rich was, “How do you do it all yourself?” I was referring to what most of us DJs, who are also business owners, struggle with; doing it all. Meaning, as the owner you are marketing, promoting and doing all of the admin work for your company. As one of the company’s DJs, you are also meeting with clients, planning the events, then actually working the events. Rich’s answer? “You can’t wear both hats”. This made perfect sense, especially because I realized, when you try to do it all – something’s gotta give! In my case, I ended up sacrificing my “dedication to my craft” – as Rich would put it. A few others tried to tell me that I needed to hire someone. Yet, I got stuck into thinking too much about the costs of hiring someone, before I even thought about who I need to hire!!!
Then, Rich said something amazing to me that changed everything. He said, “The person you need is probably in your arms reach and you just don’t see it” I thought to myself, “Nope. I’ve already thought of everyone I know who can help me.” Boy, was I wrong!!! Since this interview, I did find that person who was in arm’s reach – and another one – and another one!!! And I didn’t spend a dime! So how did I do this? I already have an agent. I simply asked her if she’d mind getting involved more in my bookings. She answered, “YES!! Absolutely!” Next, I was DJing an event for my sister’s school. I saw one of the students taking video of the event. I walked up to him and asked if he would like to start interning with us. He said, “YES! Absolutely!” Then at the same event, I had a former student and friend mention to me he was interested in video and DJing. So guess what? He’s on board with our team now as well!
